In a small village, there lived a wise old man named Mr. Thompson. He was known for his incredible knowledge and the way he helped the villagers understand difficult things. One day, a young girl named Lily approached him with a puzzled look on her face. She had come across a word in her book that she didn’t understand: ‘benevolent.’ Mr. Thompson smiled and said, “Let me show you how to find the meaning of this word using context clues.”
He took a moment to explain that context clues are hints found in the surrounding text that can help readers figure out the meanings of unfamiliar words. He told her that these clues can be definitions, synonyms, antonyms, or examples that provide insight into the word's meaning.
To illustrate, Mr. Thompson read a sentence from a book: ‘The benevolent woman always helped her neighbors, offering food and support whenever they needed it.’ He pointed out that the words ‘helped’ and ‘offered support’ are clues that suggest the meaning of ‘benevolent.’ “This means that the woman is kind and generous,” he explained.
Lily nodded, understanding how to use context clues. Mr. Thompson encouraged her to look for similar hints in her reading. He said, “Whenever you come across a word you don’t know, try to find words around it that can help you. They will guide you to the meaning.”
Feeling excited, Lily thanked Mr. Thompson and promised to practice using context clues in her reading. She realized that understanding unfamiliar words would make her reading experience much richer. From that day on, she was eager to explore new books, confident that she could uncover the meanings of any challenging words she encountered. Mr. Thompson’s advice stayed with her, helping her grow into a more skilled reader.
