Approximation: - making approximation to verify answer during the exam
🚀 Approximation is a useful technique that helps us quickly estimate the answer to a problem, especially when we want to verify our calculations during an exam. It involves rounding numbers to make them easier to work with, allowing us to perform mental calculations more efficiently. For example, if you are buying 3 items priced at ₹98, ₹102, and ₹105, you can approximate these prices to ₹100 each, making it easier to calculate the total cost as ₹300 instead of doing the exact addition.
Examples💡
Example 1: You are at a market and want to buy 5 kg of rice priced at ₹42 per kg. Instead of multiplying 5 by 42, you can approximate 42 to 40. So, 5 kg of rice would cost approximately 5 x 40 = ₹200.
Example 2: If you are traveling 123 km and your car consumes 1 litre of petrol for every 15 km, you can approximate 123 to 120. Then, you can calculate the petrol needed as 120 ÷ 15 = 8 litres.
Example 3: You have ₹500 and want to buy notebooks costing ₹47 each. You can approximate the cost to ₹50 per notebook. So, you can buy approximately 500 ÷ 50 = 10 notebooks.
Common Mistakes to Avoid⚠️
- Rounding numbers too much, leading to inaccurate results. It's important to round numbers only slightly to maintain accuracy.
- Forgetting to adjust the final answer after using approximation. Always check if the approximation needs to be adjusted to get closer to the exact answer.
- Using approximation when exact calculation is required. Know when it's appropriate to use approximation and when it's not.
